Two Container Ships Collided In The Waters Of Vietnam
According to reports, two container ships collided in the Long Tou River in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam at around 4:40 am on February 11, and the hull and multiple containers were severely damaged.
The two vessels involved were container ships "RESURGENCE " and "WAN HAI 288 " .
The Ho Chi Minh City Port Authority reported that the container ship "WAN HAI 288" has been towed to the Cat Lai port in Ho Chi Minh City for inspection after the accident on the 11th. Under safe conditions, the ship will return to Cai Mep, Vietnam to unload and then consider the repair plan.
Ship positioning data shows that the "WAN HAI 288" is currently berthing and originally planned to arrive in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China on February 11.
According to the latest query on Wan Hai's official website, the ship is currently serving the Kansai-Vietnam route (JSV), and was on voyage N019 at the time of the incident, sailing from Vietnam to Taiwan, China. At present, the original schedule has been postponed accordingly, involving two shipping companies, HMM and WAN HAI, sharing cabins.
WHAT HAPPENED?
At the time of the incident, the "RESURGENCE" was sailing upstream to Ho Chi Minh, and the "WAN HAI 288" was sailing downstream from Ho Chi Minh to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China.
After the bow of the "RESURGENCE" hit the port side of the "WAN HAI 288" , the "WAN HAI 288" ran aground on the river bank.
According to the photos at the scene, the bow position of the "RESURGENCE" was damaged, and the "WAN HAI 288" was damaged not only on the port side of the hull, but also on the deck area where the cargo was stacked on the port side of the ship and some containers.
It is understood that "WAN HAI 288" carried about 1,383 containers at that time, while "RESURGENCE" carried more than 600 containers. There were no injuries or any oil spills in the accident.
Local media reported that although the bow of the "RESURGENCE " was damaged, it quickly resumed sailing and was moored at the Ho Chi Minh City Container Terminal at around 9:30 on February 11, with multiple tugboats around to assist.
Cause Of The Accident
After the incident, the relevant departments of Ho Chi Minh City have begun to investigate the cause of the waterway traffic accident.
According to industry media analysis, judging from the trajectory of the ship, RESURGENCE, which was supposed to pass on the port side, suddenly turned sharply from the port side and hit the front part of the port side of WAN HAI 288.
There are also reports that, according to preliminary investigations, the container ship "WAN HAI 288" sailed on the wrong course, resulting in a collision with the container ship "RESURGENCE".
The data shows that the container ship "RESURGENCE", IMO number 9251169, DWT 11247 tons, can load 915 TEU , was built in 2002, flies the flag of Bahamas, and the management company is KOTOKU KAIUN CO LTD.
The container ship "WAN HAI 288" , IMO number 9871359, DWT 23803 tons, can load 2038 TEU, was built in 2021, flew the flag of Singapore, and the management company is Wan Hai Lines.
